Links Links…what, why, and how?
Links
In the world of promoting websites, links are a very good thing. But why? And, uh, what are they? A “link” is actually a process (hence “linking” as a verb), where a website places another website’s url somewhere on its pages, usually with a recommendation to “check out this great site.”
These are great not only because they introduces websites to new audiences, but when links happen, search engines (i.e. Google) notice. And they like it, because it’s an obvious clue that your website is useful, informational and appreciated. Websites that get linked to often just about always do better with search engine rankings than those that don’t. So links are great, and you want them.
Which leads us to another dictionary definition: “link building.” Link building is the process of going out there and finding ways to get links to your site. It’s a vital part of Search Engine Optimization and a crucial element of internet marketing. You can pay people lots of money to do it for you. Or you can try doing it the old fashioned way, which goes like this:
Find websites that are relevant to your industry. For example, if you sell car parts, look at car-lover blogs or auto industry news sites. Note if these sites have links somewhere (they probably do). Then write some nice, friendly emails saying, “hey, this is what I do…and it applies to your audience in this way…and it would be great to get a link to my site from you.” Be friendly, nice, brief, honest and down-to-earth. If you can, offer to reciprocate. Follow up with people.
Then sit back, relax and feel happy knowing you’re web presence is growing and getting stronger…
